In the last two years, the Haverford College Photo Collection has been gifted and purchased hundreds of new pieces, including those by Pierre Petit, Catherine Jansen, Ben Magid Rabinovitch, and Steve McCurry. Collectively, these works represent slices of photographic history from its origins in the 19th century through contemporary works.
A new exhibit at Haverford College presents 40 of these recent collection acquisitions together to illustrate the story of the photographic artform from landscapes and portraits to travel, photojournalism, and conceptual works. A Survey of Recent Acquisitions of Photographs from 2017-2019 spans French 19th-century photography documenting monuments and public works of significance—Edouard Baldus’ 1865 “Les Ramparts a Avignon,” Charles Nègre’s 1859 “General View, Vincennes Imperial Asylum”—a large gelatin silver panoramic contact print of the 1914 Harvard Yale Game by Joseph Candee, a small 1999 Katherine Jansen print, “Mythical Landscapes,” that stands out for its innovative use of xerography, and Hiroji Kubota’s contemporary color photojournalism of North Korea.
The exhibit also includes diverse works showcasing the developing technology of the artform such as an archival pigment print of George Krause’s 1971 black-and-white portrait of architect Louis I. Kahn, which demonstrates the ways in which traditional photographic materials can be adapted to the newest printing materials, and a steel engraving of Mathew Brady’s 1850 portrait of James Fenimore Cooper, which is an example of one way a photographic-derived image could be reproduced and mass circulated in another medium before photographs could be directly reproduced in ink onto a printed page.
A Survey of Recent Acquisitions of Photographs from 2017-2019 will be on view Oct. 26 through Dec. 8, at Haverford College’s Atrium Gallery in Jane Lutnick Fine Arts Center. An opening reception will be held Friday, Oct. 25, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the gallery.
The Atrium Gallery, in Jane Lutnick Fine Arts Center, is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, contact Audrey A. and John L. Dusseau Professor of Humanities William Earle Williams at wwilliam@haverford.edu.
